By invitation of the American University in Cairo, Dr. Hossam Badrawi gave a lecture on the Art of Healthcare Management on Sunday, September 21, 2025, during the annual meeting of Healthcare Program graduates (Class of 2024). The event was organized by Dr. Heba Barakat, Senior Director of Healthcare Programs, at Moataz El-Alfi Hall.
In his lecture, Dr. Badrawi drew on his experience at the National Council for Human Rights, describing how it reshaped his view of healthcare—from being a paid service to a fundamental human right, equal in importance to education and other social rights. He stressed the need for fair access to high-quality healthcare for all, including the poor, provided there is a clear vision and integrated philosophy guiding the system.
Key points he addressed:
-
The importance of strengthening primary healthcare, warning of the gap left by its absence, which was exploited by the Muslim Brotherhood.
-
The link between health, education, and nutrition, emphasizing how literacy, quality education, and proper school nutrition directly improve public health.
-
The state of hospitals: despite public hospitals accounting for nearly 80% of the sector, they do not deliver high-quality services, making private hospitals the main provider of healthcare in Egypt.
-
The role of technology in improving governance, by enhancing connections among doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and diagnostic providers.
-
The necessity of geographically expanding primary healthcare services based on consistent and unified standards.
-
The direct connection between a country’s economic progress and the quality of its healthcare services.
The session concluded with an open discussion where Dr. Badrawi answered attendees’ questions across various topics. The audience expressed strong appreciation for his ideas and contributions, ending with photo opportunities and positive engagement.
