“The Eagle, the Lion, the Bear, and the Dragon”

By

Hossam Badrawi

Throughout human history, humans have interacted with their natural environment and with the evolution of symbolic and cultural systems. Humans have projected different qualities onto the animals and symbols surrounding them, making them representative and expressive of themselves. As forms of states and societies crystallized, they searched for symbols through which they could embody themselves, using them as official logos to portray the country in the way they wanted to present themselves.

Symbols serve purposes beyond just the superficial image of the state; they are connected to the spirit of peoples and nations. One of the most famous of these symbols is the Russian bear, a global symbol of the Eurasian brown bear. It has been an official emblem in Russia since the beginning of the Tsarist era in the mid-16th century, by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The bear has also been integrated into Russian literature and folklore, from fairy tales and folk stories to proverbs and novels.

The use of the bear as a symbol for Russia has spread in various stages (the Tsarist, then the Soviet Union, then the federation) in global media and journalism, particularly in a political context. In the Western narrative, it is often used to describe Russia’s hostile policies, due to the bear’s associations with aggression and savagery.

On a different note, for children and lovers, the bear is a symbol of love, freedom, and innocence. As a result, teddy bears serve as a reminder of the innocent and pure love needed in the world today. Getting a soft teddy bear brings a wide and lasting smile to any child or lover’s face.

In reality, the bear is a large, somewhat not an intelligent animal. Legend has it that it befriended a human, and when it wanted to swat away flies while the human was asleep, it accidentally killed its friend with a large stone. The legend suggests that the bear did not want to kill its friend, but its foolishness led to its end. Skeptics say that perhaps the bear’s wild nature overpowered the feelings of friendship in the moment it killed its friend, suggesting that its intention was not entirely pure.

I see you have provided two separate pieces of text. Let me translate both of them for you:

Text 1:

“Of the three examples, which is Russia now?

The dragon has appeared in many myths around the world, and stories about it have varied. However, the dragon, as a mythical creature in some European and Eastern cultures, has ended up being associated with China in modern consciousness.

The dragon holds spiritual significance in many religions and cultures around the world. Dragon stories can be found in many Asian cultures, and in some cultures, it is considered a representative of the fundamental forces of nature, religion, and the universe. It is also linked to wisdom and often said to be wiser than humans. They are usually said to possess some form of magical or supernatural powers and are often associated with rain and rivers. In some cultures, dragons are able to speak like humans.

European culture has held a place for the dragon, and myths have spoken of it and described it, but mostly as a source of evil rather than wisdom.

How do we see the Chinese dragon in the late 21st century?”

“The eagle is considered in most cultures as the king of the sky, as the lion is in the animal kingdom. In many myths, it is considered to have a direct relationship with the world of gods, where the Greeks linked it to the god Zeus, the Romans to the god Jupiter, the Germans to the chief of gods “Odin”, and in Pharaonic Egypt, it was considered a symbol of the god Horus.

The United States adopted this eagle as its symbol in spite of the opposition of the former American president Benjamin Franklin in 1784, who declared that he was disappointed with the choice of the eagle as the country’s symbol instead of the turkey, and published a message saying: “The bald eagle’s bad character is that it steals food from hawks instead of hunting for itself, and it is cowardly”, whereas he described the turkey as “a brave and highly respectable bird, a native of America”, as if he saw the United States in the future.”

As for the lion, the African-Asian animal has become a symbol for the English, despite not being present in the European continent. Nevertheless, the lion is the official emblem in the British Isles, in England, Scotland, and Wales, due to its symbolism in Jewish-Christian heritage, where the lion was the emblem of the Kingdom of Judah. In the Middle Ages, King Henry I was the first English king to adopt the lion as the emblem of his kingdom after his coronation as King of England in 1100, at the beginning of the twelfth century. Later, Richard I became known as “Richard the Lionheart”. Over time, the lion became the permanent emblem of the kingdom, with efforts to associate it with the English persona, representing strength, courage, and nobility, even though these qualities are not originally found in their country.

Looking at the symbols, a discussion arose in my mind about the reality of their representation for countries at this stage of history. I found that the United States, along with the British lion, may slightly surpass all others, deserving to have all the emblems for itself. The bald eagle should not just be described by cultures as a symbol of freedom but as described by President Franklin, lacking what the previous thinkers meant by the symbolism of nobility. At the same time, the United States deserves to share the emblem of the Russian bear as described by mythology, killing its friends under the pretext of protecting them. It should also be the dragon as described by European culture, different from Eastern culture, a formidable creature spewing fire, crushing everyone, and dealing in weapons eye for an eye.

Today’s game is very complicated between the American eagle, the Russian bear, and the Chinese dragon in controlling human capabilities, while the British lion remains secluded under the cloak of the American eagle, moving events like a fox and not a lion. Roles change with changing circumstances, interests reconcile, and sadly, evil remains in control.

Things are going from bad to worse these days, and everyone is losing. There are conflicting interests between the intervention of the American eagle and the British lion in the affairs of other countries under the pretext of human rights preservation. Millions of people are being killed as a result of their intervention, leaving behind systems created by their intelligence agencies, leading to extremism and violence in Afghanistan and similar places, and chaos in Syria, Libya, Sudan, and the like. There is a breakdown of the ties between nations that had the potential to be leading countries, such as Iraq, after the destruction of its infrastructure and the creation of religious divisions among the people of the third world, as well as the formation of devilish alliances to empower Israel to lead the Middle East culturally and militarily.

It is strange that the emblem of Israel is a candlestick and olive branches, symbols of peace, while it is one of the most distant countries from it.

As for the symbol of the Star of David on the flag of Israel, it has meaning, although Orthodox Judaism refuses to consider it a symbol of the Jewish people because it has a connection to ancient magic and sorcery, or what was called occult sciences. The other story is that it is a symbol of the liberation of Judaism from slavery after four hundred years spent in Egypt. The triangular shape of the pyramid indicates a comprehensive depiction of power, while the inverted pyramid means breaking away from this power.

The Zionist movement chose the Star of David as its symbol in 1879, and Theodor Herzl proposed at the first Zionist conference in Basel that this star be a symbol of the Zionist movement and also a symbol of the future Jewish state. The pyramid has become a symbol of Egypt, symbolizing power, greatness, and knowledge, despite not being present on its flag.

Now, all the peoples of the world are in a dilemma, and there must be a beneficiary, and history tells us that there are no accidents in politics.

The United States withdrew from its international treaties enforced for free trade and environmental conservation when it was in their favor, and is now saying the opposite.

The world is experiencing a scarcity of rivers, with the polar ice caps melting due to increased use of coal, making the planet more environmentally polluted. The world is suffering from an unprecedented shortage of energy resources despite their availability, and food sources despite their existence. Humanity is witnessing an unprecedented population explosion, economic stagnation crippling countries, and rising daily living costs leading to potential revolutions and chaos.

The United States is harming its allies and killing its friends in an unprecedented madness in history.

Israel openly proclaims its desire to annihilate the Palestinian people, supported by the madness of the American eagle and the British lion, symbols of modern racism.

What should we do in Egypt to escape from a humanitarian, economic, developmental, and environmental predicament caused by external factors? What is our way out? This is what we should agree on and unite for, and open our minds to listen to the voice of reason. I remain optimistic despite the darkness imposed by reality.

Technical education and vocational training
Written by
Dr. Hossam Badrawy
Technical education and vocational training accommodates more than half of the students who enroll in secondary school after middle school, representing a majority of young people. Given that the Egyptian economy seeks to reach growth rates of more than 6% annually in a sustainable manner for at least ten years, the job opportunities that are available and will be available in the future are great. This development cannot be sustained without high-level technical labor and effective regulation of the professions required by this development. Indeed, the regional and global labor market, especially in the northern Mediterranean, will need labor from outside its geographical scope, which will open greater opportunities for Egyptian youth if It was well prepared to fill the jobs needed by this market, which would increase their and the state’s resources, reduce unemployment, and achieve economic and humanitarian gain for citizens.
Technical education, like any old educational system, is exposed to many challenges, and it also contains strengths and opportunities for development.
The most important challenges of this type of education are the absence of an integrated vision for it, and the low budgets allocated for development needs and ambitions. It suffers, like other education sectors, from the philosophy of distributing and directing students on the basis of the total grades in the basic education completion certificate, while internal coordination takes place. For the school according to the capacity of the department and the number of teachers in the specializations and also according to the grades, without taking into account the needs of the labor market or the inclinations and readiness of the students.
Reality confirms, for example, the high unemployment rate for graduates of technical schools, especially commercial ones, in which the enrollment rate rises to about 34% of the total number of people enrolled in technical education, most of whom are girls. It is as if it were a garage created by the education system not with the aim of acquiring skills and increasing knowledge, but rather to spend… Time in this vital age stage is of no use to the youth and society
It is surprising that there is no demand for agricultural education in Egypt, which has an influential agricultural history in the world. The demand for vocational education in this sector coincides with a low social view of this type of education, and it and its graduates are considered to be of a lower social rank.
All of these things were generated and expanded in the absence of a dream and a lack of vision, which narrowed to have a limited goal of assimilating the youth, regardless of the feasibility in educational institutions that do not teach, and skills that are not acquired, within a political framework that claims success simply for the sake of assimilation.
Are these challenges that we created ourselves capable of being modernized? I believe that it is possible to overcome them, but rather to launch technical education and vocational training with a vision that is integrated with general education and intertwined with the vision and dream of reform and development in Egypt. But how? This is the question. ‏
The policies proposed to promote and develop technical education and vocational training must be an integral part of the human development strategy that we must pursue, and since distinct and scattered efforts have been applied in this field over the past years, a comprehensive overview of the development efforts will be given. It has greater value and achieves the desired development
The proposed policies for developing technical education and vocational training are divided into six packages of policies, which we present as follows:
First: Policies for general education related to technical education:
The student in this system still has to obtain general knowledge, language skills, use of computers, and study materials that deepen his national affiliation and form his identity and connection to society. As for higher education, it has an important parallel role, which is the graduation of teachers and trainers for these institutions, as well as the expansion of technical and technological education institutes as part of the higher education system, which will lead to two influential results, the first of which is: the compatibility of higher technical education with the requirements of some professions, and the other result: It appears in the societal impact of merging technical education and higher education in raising the value of this type of education according to society’s customs and the real need for it, provided that this is in the presence of a national qualifications framework in Egypt (we have been seeking to approve it for twenty years!!)… Therefore, This type of education must have flexibility in the curriculum, which must keep pace with the type of professions associated with the number of years of study, which must not be limited to two, three, or four years, but rather with educational packages, merit grades, and skill proficiency taught on the credit hour system.
Second: Policies for developing the umbrella responsible for this type of education:
The umbrella now is essentially the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, and specific ministries such as industry, agriculture, tourism, manpower, housing, etc., which may supervise some training centers and their programmes, but in an incoherent manner, and without a coherent comprehensive vision, which may scatter efforts. And distracts her. We witnessed the creation and elimination of a ministry responsible for technical education without analysis. Why was it created and why was it abolished?!
Third: Policies for implementing quality assurance and accreditation systems:
For all programs related to technical education and vocational training and its institutions, any service must have standards, and any service must be evaluated based on the indicators of these standards. There is no doubt that the general education standards that must be approved by the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Authority in Education differ from the technical skills “industrial, agricultural, or in other professions,” which must be approved and teaching and training evaluated for them by neutral evaluation bodies. This is the philosophy that I consider it obligatory in technical education
We must differentiate between accrediting the educational or training program proposed by the specific councils for each group of professions, and accrediting the educational or training institution that teaches or trains this curriculum… both of which are required, and these are new relationships for the technical education community. One of the Ministry’s most important achievements is the establishment of a new independent body for quality assurance and accreditation in technical, technical, and vocational education (ETQAAN) with support from all major development partners (USAID, GIZ EU) in 2022.
Fourth: Policies for developing and enhancing the performance of working human cadres:
Whether in schools or training institutions and centers, this is done by establishing a system of material and in-kind incentives for all members of the technical and vocational education community, and holding study programs with international institutes to provide joint curricula in which technical education students from inside and outside Egypt participate, and sending scholarships and creating Partnerships with the private sector We commend the Ministry of Education and Technical Education for including the Technical Education Teachers Academy (TVETA) within the new organizational structure of the Ministry, and also introducing a new sectoral concept represented by the sectoral centers of excellence (Centers of Competence), where it began Applying this concept with KFW and the European Union in the new and renewable energy sector and with GIZ in the engineering and automotive industries sectors. It is worth noting that the Ministry, since 2018, has presented a new model for education, namely applied technology schools, in partnership with leading private sector companies and international institutions to ensure Quality. We started with three schools and now we have more than 41 schools, including 6 new schools with an advanced concept under the name International Schools of Applied Technology.
Fifth: Policies to change society’s view of technical education:
This comes through media interest in technical education, highlighting the capabilities, fields, and prestigious job opportunities for its graduates, and appreciating the first and most distinguished among them. Likewise, adding technological education to the name of technical education and its content (technical and technological education and vocational training) may be a factor in changing society’s impressions about This education is more positive
Sixth: Policies for practicing various professions:
This is done by determining the levels of technical competence for each profession, licensing and re-licensing, and partnering with the private sector in this, so that the names of professions are unified at the national level, their descriptions and skills are determined, and appropriate and unified programs are developed to obtain those skills, and the setting of their tests and the granting of certificates. Knowing that there are serious steps taken by the Ministry in this regard, represented by developing competency-based curricula, which are characterized by their sensitivity and clear connection with the labor market, as the methodology begins with sessions with representatives of the labor market to agree on the qualifications specifications of the graduate, leading to the student’s acquisition of The skills, knowledge and behaviors that the labor market needs today, and since 2018 the Ministry of Education and Technical Education has thankfully developed 86 curricula according to the competency methodology out of a total of 125 curricula and reviewed them by labor market representatives, as well as involving labor market representatives in practical examinations for education students. Technical level, granting the student a diploma with another certificate indicating the competencies he has mastered, and also creating 29 new programs and curricula to respond to the needs of the labor market.
Professional merit scores for each profession must be visible and agreed upon between countries. Perhaps the European Union and the respectable efforts it has made in this field have united European countries, facilitating the movement of professionals and teachers across borders between one country and another. My call was – and still is – for us to adopt these standards and this method, so that our professional youth will have access to… A broader labor market than Egypt in the Arab countries and the northern Mediterranean. If the technical education and vocational training systems are compatible with European systems, this will be a positive factor in creating good job opportunities there without the need for illegal presence or accepting low salaries due to a low professional level and the absence of a license. This is linked to the recognized degrees of professional competence. In line with this, the Ministry of Education is conducting an international survey of the needs of the labor market in Europe and the Gulf countries for Egyptian workers and determining the necessary skills and qualifications with the aim of developing programs to meet these needs. This initiative is funded by the European Bank. For Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)..
The opportunity is available. Rather, I see it calling and striving for us, and the time has come for us to take the initiative. It does not require a new genius, but rather it requires political will and sustainable application.

Arabic language and identity
Between wisdom and the beauty of words and melody
The goal of teaching the Arabic language is not only to eradicate illiteracy in form, but the content is the belief that learning the language has a great impact on all aspects of life in any nation. It is an essential part of our identity. It is the means that transmits our history to us, documents our present, and transmits it to future generations. our civilization,
The goal, as I said, is not just reading and writing. It is a narrow, short-term goal. But we must understand that this language is the means by which we understand each other. We cannot understand ourselves or each other without thinking, and we do not think in a vacuum. Rather, the mind thinks in language. What, and he portrays his thoughts to himself and to others using words, sentences, and images drawn by language and transmitted from one individual to another or kept in memory, and from all of this identity is formed.
Learning the mother tongue, and any other language, at an early age trains the individual to think multiple languages, and it is known that children are more capable of learning multiple languages than adults. In order for the child’s mother tongue to become rooted in his mind, it must be taught at the highest level, and to a standard. Children’s abilities to write, read, and understand from the age of eight to nine years using scientific measurement tests.
Language for an individual’s life is not only a tool for dealing with society, but rather it is his means of thinking and feeling, and it is his means of conveying his ideas and benefiting from the ideas of others. It is his means of understanding, appreciating, evaluating, and then choosing from alternatives.
a
Now it comes to mind, does learning a second language or using foreign references threaten identity? Is it correct for a child not to learn another language in the initial stages of education? The definitive answer is no. Teaching another language does not threaten identity and does not threaten knowledge of the mother tongue unless teaching the mother language is incomplete and weak. A child can absorb multiple languages more than adults, and we should not assume that teaching a second language will overpower his Arabic language and make his thinking and identity linked to another mother. We are like someone who does not want to enter the field of science with others for fear of defeat, and we prefer our victory without competition.
Identity, as I said, is linked to language, but it is also linked to living in the classroom and what the student studies in terms of history and geography, and an conscience that is formed inside school, at home with the family, in front of television screens, from the outputs of art, and now from social media as well..
The truth is that I understand the fragmentation of identity, because the collective mind of our nation is fragmented in identity between Salafist thought, which emphasizes religious identity only, nationalist thought, which emphasizes Arab identity, and national thought, which confirms Egyptian identity with its multiple sources.
We must be more realistic when we discuss identity, belonging, and citizenship, because instilling them in the child’s conscience is complex and has multiple approaches. We should not close the door to openness to other cultures because we are unable to lead the multiple approaches to the identity of the Egyptian person. The challenge is ours and must be faced with science and developing the teaching of the Arabic language. Using modern tools, not escaping and withdrawing.
——————————————
I am interested in knowing the origins and definition of the sentences we say, and analyzing the words that are often debated in society and each one intends different meanings, my friends in that. In one of these conversations, genius sentences and sayings came out that summarized life’s affairs and explained in lines what others might write about on pages, but people did not know where they came from. Phrases we say that we think are colloquial, and they are an authentic Arabic language
I share with you some of Al-Mutanabbi’s poetry verses, many of which people memorize but do not know that they are the words of one of the poets, Al-Mutanabbi.
.
The immortal phrase, “O nation whose ignorance the nations have laughed at,” is nothing more than part of a poem by Al-Mutanabbi that was addressed to the ruler of Egypt during his reign, satirizing the situation of the Arab nation a thousand years ago, but as if it were being said today…
“The aim of religion is for you to keep your mustaches trimmed
O nation, nations laughed at your ignorance
Below are some verses that contain golden lines that we all know, but most of us do not know that they are Al-Mutanabbi’s sayings, such as:
Whatever a person wishes he achieves. The winds blow in a way that ships do not desire.
Among other poems we find:
“High honor is not safe from harm
Until blood is shed on his sides.”
And verses of life wisdom such as:
“If my blame comes to you from an imperfect person, it is my testimony that I am perfect.”
“Whoever did not die by the sword died by something else, the causes are multiple, but death is one.”
“The person with reason is miserable in bliss with his mind
And the brother of ignorance enjoys happiness in misery.”
“With that, the days were spent among its people
“The misfortunes of a people bring benefits to a people.”
From a poem addressing the ruler of the country, he says:
“O most just of people, except in my dealings, you are the opponent and the judge.”
It is as if he is talking about the separation of powers that we demand today.
He expresses his wisdom by saying:
“If you move away from a people and they are destined…
. Do not leave them, for the departed are a concern
“O you who are dear to us, when we leave them, we feel everything is nothingness after you.”
Perhaps Al-Mutanabbi knew that he would be remembered more than one thousand and fifty years after his death, and perhaps forever, when he said and we repeat:
“If you honor the generous one, you will possess him
And if you honor the mean person, he will rebel.”
He expresses his pride, self-esteem and confidence when he says:
“And eternity is only one of the narrators of my poems. If I recite poetry, eternity becomes a singer
I sleep with my eyelids full of strays
And creation watches over its neighbors and disputes.”
He says with the intelligence of an expert in life:
“If you see the lion’s teeth sticking out
Do not think that the lion is smiling.”
and say:
“If you venture into honorable honor
Do not be content with anything less than the stars
The taste of death is in a small matter
Like the taste of death in a great matter.”
———————————-
Commenting on the dialogue, my friend Dr. sent me a message. Mahmoud Hamza, who knows the language, is passionate about literature and poetry, and my partner in working with students and youth in education first, participated, saying:

Al-Mutanabbi was nothing but a living expression of the situation of Arab society in the fourth century AH, with all its dispersion, division, and religious falsity that we may suffer from until now. Despite Al-Mutanabbi’s poetic vision, which was often issued out of a position or personal interest, he honestly expressed the condition of our nation.
Arabic in a precise, expressive language, so his poetry deserved to fill the world and occupy people.
I conclude my speech with you by saying that the man in the street and the illiterate sang poems by Ahmed Rami, Ahmed Shawqi, Abu Firas Al-Hamdani, Ahmed Shafiq Kamel, Muhammad Iqbal, Ali Al-Jarim, Ibrahim Naji, Bayram Al-Tunisi, Hafez Ibrahim and others, when they were sung by Umm Kulthum, Abdel-Wahab, and Abdel-Halim Hafez, for art is a means. It is great for teaching the language, just as school is. Let us not forget that we have multiple approaches and we must work on all of them.
