What is the Truth?
By Hossam Badrawi

The experience of living in complete darkness is known by several names, with one of the most notable being the “Dark Retreat” — a spiritual and meditative practice used in some Buddhist and Taoist traditions. In this practice, a person lives in a completely dark room for several days to deepen their inner awareness and explore their consciousness away from external influences.

Another concept is “Sensory Deprivation”, a scientific and psychological experience where a person is isolated from sensory stimuli such as light, sound, and sometimes even touch, to study how the brain reacts in the absence of sensory inputs.

Some cultures use darkness therapy as a method to relieve stress and promote deep meditation. It is said to help restore emotional and neurological balance.

I once participated in a fascinating experiment where I met five strangers. We weren’t allowed to introduce ourselves before the experience.

The experiment involved entering a completely dark place (where the sense of sight disappears). We met and got to know each other without seeing one another, moving from room to room. Each room contained different objects that we explored by touch, our hands brushed against one another, and voices merged in our minds. We formed connections in this new framework.

The experience ended in a room where we ordered drinks and talked, and then sight was restored — revealing each other’s faces for the first time. Surprisingly, each of us had a different mental image of the others.

So, is truth tied to our senses? If so, does this mean that the entire universe depends on our sensory perception — that in the absence of those senses, the universe may not exist as we know it, neither in form nor substance?

What is Truth?

Truth appears to be neither purely fixed nor entirely relative — rather, it is a complex blend of both. Perhaps absolute truth exists, but our awareness of it is always subjective. This is the philosophical and existential challenge that humanity faces.

What seems like absolute truth in one historical moment can later be revealed as a mere approximation when new theories emerge. For example, gravity, once considered an absolute truth in Newton’s time, evolved with Einstein’s insights and now faces new challenges within quantum mechanics. This demonstrates that even scientific truth is relative, not absolute, yet it tends to get closer to the ultimate reality as knowledge advances.

I believe that self-awareness through the mind is humanity’s greatest gift — the miracle of consciousness and intellect.

Since the dawn of philosophy, humans have questioned the nature of existence and whether the world around us is truly real or merely an illusion shaped by our senses and mental perceptions. If all our knowledge relies on our senses, does that mean what we see is ultimate reality? Or is there a hidden truth beyond our perception?

Our five senses — sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell — are the tools humans use to understand the world. However, these senses are limited.

Even when we see, our vision is restricted to a certain range of the light spectrum (e.g., we can’t see infrared or ultraviolet rays). Similarly, our hearing only detects specific frequencies, while some animals can hear sounds we can’t perceive.

Plato believed the sensory world we experience is merely a distorted reflection of an ideal world of “Forms.”

Descartes doubted everything until he reached one certainty: “I think, therefore I am”, meaning that the mind is the path to discovering truth.

Kant distinguished between the “thing-in-itself” (reality as it truly is) and the “thing as we perceive it” (what reaches us through our senses and mind). This implies that true reality may differ from our perception, but our minds shape it in ways that enable us to engage with it.

Some theories suggest that the universe might be a mere “projection” of information from a higher dimension, meaning our senses only grasp a fraction of the truth.

Can the Mind Transcend the Senses?

If the senses are limited, can the mind comprehend absolute truth? Today, we can create virtual worlds that are indistinguishable from sensory reality, making us wonder: Is our current world itself a form of simulation?

Everything we know about existence is filtered through sensory and mental perception, and true reality may be far deeper than we imagine. Yet we have no direct means of accessing it except through intellectual and experimental tools.

The ultimate question remains: Can we ever transcend our sensory limitations and perceive reality as it truly is, or are we destined to remain prisoners of our limited perception?

What About the Truth of Creation?

When Darwin proposed his theory of evolution over billions of years, this scientific theory clashed with the religious beliefs of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic scholars, who interpreted their holy texts literally. The same resistance faced the idea that Earth is not the center of the universe or that our planet orbits the sun — concepts that scientific evidence eventually confirmed.

Interpretations are human-made, not sacred. Humanity must mature and accept that knowledge accumulates over time, rather than clinging to outdated interpretations of ancient texts.

The religious, philosophical, and scientific debate about the origin of humanity — symbolized in religion by Adam — raises key questions:

Was Adam created fully formed as we know him now? Some conservative thinkers insist this is true, rejecting evolution entirely. They believe that God directly molded Adam from clay and breathed life into him.

However, many contemporary thinkers, including some Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Muslim scholars, view the Adam and Eve story as symbolic rather than literal.

Most traditional interpretations of human origins conflict with scientific discoveries, which has fueled conflict between science, philosophy, and religion throughout history. Increased knowledge may help bridge these gaps.

Genetic research has shown that changes in the male Y chromosome cannot be traced back to a single male ancestor. Conversely, mitochondrial DNA — passed from mothers to their children — suggests that all humans can trace their maternal lineage back to a woman who lived in East Africa around 250,000 years ago, known as “Mitochondrial Eve.”

This evidence indicates that modern humanity likely descended from a larger group rather than just two individuals like Adam and Eve. Genetic diversity requires a minimum of 50 individuals to ensure viable variation, and a population of at least 500 to prevent the loss of traits through genetic drift.

Given that not all individuals pass on their genes, researchers estimate that the earliest human population needed about 2,500 individuals to ensure the species’ survival — far from the traditional concept of two original humans.

This aligns with evolutionary theories, fossil records, and genetic evidence, but contradicts literal interpretations of the Adam and Eve narrative.

Furthermore, the span of 300,000 years is barely a second — or less — in the 14-billion-year history of the universe and Earth’s 4-billion-year existence. Humanity, with all its complexity, emerged only in the final fraction of this cosmic timeline.

In truth, we are not even a snapshot in the grand film of the universe — yet we believe the entire story revolves around us.

Perhaps the ultimate truth is that human arrogance blinds us to our insignificance in the cosmic scale — and maybe, just maybe, our existence is part of a vast, complex simulation.

In the end, the question remains as it began: What is truth?

Reforming the General Secondary Education System
By Dr. Hossam Badrawi

The state has proposed a project to reform the “General Secondary Education” system under a new name: “The Egyptian Baccalaureate.” The name does not concern me; rather, it is the philosophy of development that matters.

In response to societal inquiries, the Minister of Education invited a group of experts, including former education ministers, some university presidents, deans of education faculties, and me, to discuss the proposed project.

Before delving into the details, I would like to emphasize the following:

Key Principles for Any Educational Policy:

Education and Learning as Lifelong Processes
Education begins at birth and continues until the end of life. Formal education plays a key role, equipping individuals with essential skills like communication, language, mathematics, arts, computing, self-learning, and behavior development.

Gradual and Calm Development
Reforming education should be gradual and inclusive, involving stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation. However, urgency is required in changing centralized management methods, upgrading educational districts and schools, and refining their responsibilities.

Global Context and Future-Oriented Perspective
Education reform in Egypt must align with global trends and have a future-oriented perspective. It should also reflect on higher education systems and connect curricula with local and international societal needs.

The School as the Foundation
The school is the primary unit of education, the teacher is its core, and its administration serves as its nervous system. Any reform must prioritize teacher preparation, including their social, financial, and moral well-being, to elevate their status in society.

Pillars of Development:

Based on these principles, the proposed educational reform must aim to:

Achieve comprehensive quality standards.

Expand community participation.

Enhance the knowledge infrastructure to add to it rather than deplete it.

Align with international requirements and seek global accreditation for students.

Philosophy and Approach to Reform:

Reforming an educational system in a densely populated country like Egypt requires a strategic vision, comprehensive planning, and gradual implementation to ensure success and sustainability.

Steps for Effective Reform:

Analyze the Current Situation:
Examine the strengths and weaknesses of the current system, including infrastructure, curricula, teaching methods, and teacher quality.

Future Needs Assessment:
Identify skills and competencies required to align with both local and global labor markets. Develop proactive, job-creating individuals.

Data-Driven Decisions:
Use statistics on enrollment rates, attendance, extracurricular activities, academic performance, and available resources.

Set Clear Goals:
Define short-term and long-term objectives for the reform process.

Engage Stakeholders:
Involve unions, educational institutions, teachers, parents, students, and NGOs. Hold community dialogues to ensure public support and make society a partner in the process.

Strategic Planning:

Revise curricula to include critical thinking, AI, and technology.

Train teachers intensively in modern methods.

Address student overcrowding and classroom needs.

Resource Allocation:

Plan financing in collaboration with international organizations and development banks.

Encourage private sector participation while prioritizing underserved areas.

Pilot and Review:
Test the new system in select regions, evaluate results, and refine based on feedback.

Performance Measurement:
Establish clear success indicators and conduct regular evaluations to address challenges.

Community Awareness:
Conduct awareness campaigns to highlight the benefits of reform, using media to share success stories and build public trust.

Ensure Sustainability:
Create a dedicated unit to monitor and maintain system improvements, drawing from international experiences in countries with similar demographics (e.g., India, Indonesia).

The Challenge of Religious Education in the Reform:

The government is also considering making religious education one of the core subjects in the new system, contributing to the final grades required for higher education.

This raises critical questions:

Should we teach religion or focus on values and ethics?

How do we accommodate citizens who do not follow Islam or Christianity?

Is it constitutional to enforce the study of a specific religion?

Globally, very few countries (e.g., Iran, Sudan, Pakistan) include religion as 15% of the grades for university admission. Introducing religious education into this system risks sparking societal conflict. Those opposing it may be labeled as anti-religious, shifting focus from education’s core purpose to divisive debates.

A Call for Rational Reform:

The essence of education lies in critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning, while the essence of religion is belief and obedience. Mixing the two risks undermining both.

Let religious education remain a personal matter, and integrate universal values and ethics through philosophy and logic in the curriculum.

Schools and teachers play a fundamental role in shaping values through sports, arts, cultural activities, and fostering creativity. This approach builds tolerance and acceptance of diversity, moving away from segregating individuals based on religion or differences.

Wake up, and may God guide us all.

Here is a summary of Dr. Hossam Badrawi’s intervention in the Prime Minister’s meeting with thinkers and writers on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, in the presence of Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati and 16 influential writers in public opinion:
:
Dr. Badrawi began with a positive aspect of the Prime Minister’s presentation, especially:
1- Greetings for the move towards the goal of 42% clean energy within 5 years
2- Greetings for the state’s efforts to increase the volume of seawater desalination and the boom that has been achieved in this regard
3- Supporting the move towards making amendments to the tax system because the private sector suffers severely from tax arbitrariness and the injustice of its estimates
Then he moved on to his requests:
1- Increasing the space and breadth of the media’s chest for freedom of expression and accepting positive criticism. Freedom of expression is a constitutional entitlement and must be made available
2- Increase communication with thinkers and provide them with information instead of obtaining it from unverified sources
3- Promise to implement the articles of the constitution that have not been implemented, especially towards the application of decentralization in education and health as a beginning to build local cadres in all social and political levels
4- Demand that the state promise the issue of separation of powers is being implemented, which is a basic constitutional entitlement for the civil state because the executive authority is now the primary controller of the administration of the state and society is not convinced or there is real accountability, which creates accumulated anger within the souls
5- Support positive civil society initiatives towards achieving the country’s vision such as the Bridges Initiative in implementing the country’s vision vertically in education in Ismailia Governorate
6- Directing attention to the importance of the “Will” initiative proposed by the Egyptian Competitiveness Council, which aims to remove 50% of the routine procedures that hinder achievement in all ministries.
In continuation:
Developing Egypt’s vision for education to 2050 and obligating the government to implement announced projects, specific measurement standards, and oversight by the media and parliament

Professor Hossam Badrawi’s speech at the Venice Conference on the Mediterranean Basin
Friday, September 6, 2024 in Arabic:
“My friend Professor Saporito
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished colleagues,
I share with you with passion the objectives of the conference and my readiness to participate in our future work plans.
You all know that Egypt’s location in the Mediterranean is not only geographical; it is deeply rooted in history and culture.
Egypt was a beacon of knowledge and culture. The city of Alexandria became one of the most important centers of learning in the ancient world.
The Library of Alexandria was a symbol of the Mediterranean’s role as a meeting place for science, attracting scholars from all over the region. This tradition of intellectual exchange is something we continue to draw inspiration from today.
Egypt stands out as a symbol of continuity and resilience. Despite many challenges, Egypt has maintained its cultural identity and been a stabilizing force in the Mediterranean.
The Mediterranean has always been more than just a body of water. It is a cradle of civilizations, a crossroads of cultures, and a living witness to the shared heritage of humanity.
From the Phoenicians and Greeks to Egyptians and Ottomans, this region has been a center of exchange – of goods, ideas, and people – for thousands of years.

But today, as we stand at the intersection of past glory and future potential, the Mediterranean is also a mirror of global crises and opportunities.”
**The Mediterranean as a historical center:**
“In this great basin, empires have risen and fallen, religions have intertwined, and cultures have merged.
The Mediterranean is not just a geographical feature; it is a symbol of human connection.

But it has also been a theater of conflict – a place where differences in religion, culture, and politics have led to conflict.

This duality, this constant tension between conflict and cooperation, is what makes the Mediterranean unique, and why its future is so important to the world.”
**The role of institutions:**
“We recognize the importance of institutions like UNESCO that have long sought to exploit the potential of the Mediterranean to promote peace and cooperation.

In 1995, UNESCO launched the Mediterranean Programme, a bold initiative aimed at fostering new institutions, NGOs, and projects across the region.
This programme was built on the belief that through dialogue and cooperation, the Mediterranean can become a model of peaceful coexistence.

Many of these initiatives are still active today, a testament to the enduring power of institutional support in shaping the destiny of the region.”
**Today’s Challenges and Opportunities:**
“But the Mediterranean today faces new challenges – challenges that are global in nature but that have a particularly acute impact on this region.

Political instability, migration crises, and environmental degradation are just some of the pressing issues.

Traditional institutions continue to play a vital role, but they are often overburdened.

At the same time, there is a growing sense that these challenges cannot be solved by institutions alone.

We need the energy, creativity and innovation of young people.”
**New Generation Mediterranean Community:**
“Here lies the opportunity. Today’s generation of young people is more connected than ever before thanks to advances in information and communication technologies.

They are creating a new language – a common cultural and linguistic framework that transcends national borders.

These young people are not just passive recipients of culture; Rather, they are active creators, shaping a new Mediterranean identity that is inclusive, dynamic, and future-oriented.”
**Virtual Forum Proposal:**
As I discussed with Professor Saporito,
“With this in mind, I support the proposal that we take a bold step forward: the creation of a new Virtual Forum – a digital meeting place where people from across the Mediterranean can come together to exchange ideas, engage in dialogue, and build a shared vision of peace and tolerance.
This Forum will not be just a platform; it will be a community, a space where the voices of young people are heard and where they can lead the way in addressing the region’s challenges.”
**Conclusion:**
“In conclusion, the destiny of the Mediterranean is not simply a matter of preserving the past; it is about building the future. It is about empowering the new generation to take responsibility for their shared heritage and use it as the basis for a more peaceful and tolerant Mediterranean society. Let us support them in this endeavor, because in doing so we will ensure that the Mediterranean remains a beacon of civilization – not just in history, but in the years to come.”
“Thank you
Hossam Badrawi”

Authentic sun, love and the Nile
Written by
Hossam Badrawi
Yesterday, while listening to the song Shams Al-Aseel, influenced by the splendor of the words, the beauty of the melody, and the dazzling performance of Mrs. Umm Kulthum, I was encouraged to record my feelings and feelings and send them to my friend, the genius musician Rajeh Daoud, to add and obtain the reflections of Shams Al-Aseel on his conscience.
The Nile River, especially in Mansoura, where I was born and lived the first ten years of my life, has a special flavor. We lived in a villa on the shore of the Nile, among a group of ten villas, in front of Shagaret al-Durr Garden, and our house had a small garden that was covered by flood waters at its peak, so that its waters met the walls of the villa.
The Nile in front of us was wide, and I had never seen anything like its breadth except in Aswan. The movement of the boats, the sight of the castles, the movement of the water that flows easily and carries them along, and the boatmen focusing their long oars on the wall of our house so that they do not collide with it, have remained stuck in my mind until now, as if they were an artistic painting.
The river, with its beauty, must have created a place inside me. It romanticized my subconscious mind and emerged years later in my love for inspiring words, the search for beauty, and somehow connecting the fabric of serenity together.
I listened to the song Shams Al-Aseel in the quiet of the night and closed my eyes as if I was listening to it for the first time… and lost myself in the words of Bayram Al-Tunisi and the music composed by Riad Al-Sunbati.
I believe that Umm Kulthum was crowned “Shams Al Aseel” at the pinnacle of Arabic singing, and she is one of the masterpieces of the classics of music that carried the spirit of Egypt with all its charm, appeal, and humanity in an authentic oriental melody that connects man to place, merges love with nature, and creates a genius tapestry that paints a complete picture, as if we see with the eye what the ear hears. From overlapping descriptions between the river, the sun, the breeze and lovers..
Bayram chose to address the Nile as an introduction to his emotional theme, knowing that it is a symbol of life and stability. He immersed himself in describing it and describing the feelings of loved ones in a mixture that I have never seen in Arabic poetry. The composer took time to embody these natural and human images to weave with the poet and the creativity of the performance a multi-colored and dimensional palette that gives the listener spaces. Vast of imagination and invites contemplation.
I read it to a specialist, and I will go back to my friend Rajeh Daoud, the great musician, to confirm that the poetic text of Shams al-Asil is devoid of any repeated stanzas, and that the composer used two lines from the first stanza as a doctrine that is repeated between the poetic stanzas, thus creating a dramatic line that made this doctrine the distinctive melody of the entire song.
That is, the structure of the song was written without a doctrine, that is, without repeating any verses, and therefore the audible doctrine was invented by the composer.
The composer added another innovation that demonstrates experience and high craftsmanship by recalling the call word “O Neil” and adding it to the last verses of the doctrine he chose. It did not appear at the end of any verse in the written text except once in the first verse. The narratives say that this was an addition by the woman with her poetic sense.
Shams Al-Aseel is a truly unique experience. If you listen to this melody while you are outside Egypt, you will have a strong feeling that it is not just a passing song. It addresses your feelings and nostalgia for your homeland with all the meanings of the homeland… place and time, people and memories, wishes and dreams. And if you are not Egyptian, perhaps you would like to go to Egypt one day to see what happens when the afternoon sun reflects on the Nile.
The song begins with verses that paint a picture, and then begins to describe feelings and mix the Nile with feelings of love and loved ones
The afternoon sun has set
Palm wicker, Neil
A masterpiece and an imaginative one
On your page, beautiful
The coupé ends with the refrain created by the composer:
And the flute on the beach sang
And the feet lean towards the blowing of the air (and it is repeated on the blowing of the air)
When Ali passes by
Oh Neil
Yaaaaaaaaaannel
The song takes us into another area with miraculous words, a unique melody, and an unparalleled performance:
“Oh Neil, me and the one I love
We liken you to your class
Because you softened our hearts when your love softened
They described us in love
He is your friend
We don’t have anything to do with you or us
In sweetness, he is like Neil
Oh Neil
“Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan”
What beauty and sweetness this is as she sings: “Neither we nor you, there is no match for sweetness, Neil.”
Before ending with the refrain created by the composer and performer:
“”
Umm Kulthum continues her wonderful performance, Shadia:
My love, Neil, and I have fulfilled our wishes
Where passion anchors our anchors
And if the night grows longer and longer, our nights become shorter
And the one who lost his passion cried and had a long night
And the flute on the beach sang
And the feet lean on the blowing of the air
When Ali passes by
My love, Neil, and I have fulfilled our wishes…
What’s this wonder
The poet is creative in his words and the melody, which must be described as professional, and Umm Kulthum changes the tune while closing it. “A place that anchors passion…it anchors our anchors.”
We do not know whether it is passion or passion.
The song ends with:
Me and my beloved, Neil, are absent from conscience
The moon rises for us and sets as if it had never happened
Two nights around us we hear the curlew laughing
Oh Neil, oh Neil
And the flute on the beach sang
And the feet lean on the blowing of the air
When Ali passes by
We started in the evening sun, describing a magical moment at the end of the day, and we ended in the song with the moon that rose and set, and with the voice of the curlew in a performance. I advise you to re-listen to it because the listener will not differentiate between the real voice of the curlew and the voice of Umm Kulthum the curlew.
We started at the end of the day in the afternoon until the end of the night in the absence of Qumra, on a journey of love in which the song combined humanity, feelings, the Nile, its purity, the breeze’s leaf, and its whims.
