At the Dreamers\u2019 Caf\u00e9 \u2013 Father’s Day<\/strong>
\nBy Dr. Hossam Badrawi<\/em><\/p>\n

The youth of \u201cDreamers of Tomorrow\u201d touched my soul when they asked,
\n\u201cWhy don\u2019t we celebrate Father\u2019s Day in Egypt as we do Mother’s Day?\u201d<\/p>\n

A gentle young woman said:
\n\u201cMy father is my role model. Without him, I wouldn’t be who I am. Dr., what\u2019s the story of Father’s Day?\u201d<\/p>\n

I replied:
\nHistorically, the idea of dedicating a day to honor fathers came from a woman named Sonora Louise from Michigan in 1909.
\nShe wanted to honor her father, who had single-handedly raised his six children after their mother died.
\nShe submitted a petition recommending the celebration of Father\u2019s Day, and it was supported by many groups.
\nJune 19th was set for the celebration in her town, and the idea eventually spread across the U.S. and to other countries.
\nToday, countries worldwide celebrate Father\u2019s Day on different dates.<\/p>\n

Most Arab countries, including Egypt, celebrate it on June 21st.<\/p>\n

The Quran says in Surah Al-Isra:
\n“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, do not say to them a word of disrespect, nor scold them, but address them in terms of honor.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

This shows that God placed the duty to parents right after His worship.
\nCaring for them and celebrating them is a duty \u2014 not just on one day, but every day.<\/p>\n

The young woman said:
\n\u201cYou\u2019ve often spoken about your mother, but we haven\u2019t heard much about your father. What was he like, and how did he influence you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I answered:
\nWhat measure do we use to define the value of a person in life?
\nThis question came to my mind as I remembered my father on Father\u2019s Day after your question.
\nShould I feel sorrow or joy when remembering him after he passed?<\/p>\n

Do I grieve his absence from my eyes, thoughts, and heart?
\nDo I miss his wisdom, fairness, and love?
\nDo I long for his smile, his care, his distinctive kiss?
\nDo I feel sorrow when I see my late mother\u2019s eyes drift in sadness and her anxious beauty when we mentioned him?<\/p>\n

Do I grieve for all that?
\nOr do I rejoice for such a father \u2014 a grandfather, a great-grandfather, an uncle, and a man whose presence enriched every member of our family, young and old?<\/p>\n

He enriched us with his mind, justice, and wisdom.
\nHe gave unconditionally, united us around him, and gave meaning, form, and identity to the word \u201cfamily.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rejoice for him and us \u2014 for a man whose life was full of endless giving and innovative thought.
\nA man who took responsibility for those around him without hesitation or complaint \u2014 even from the age of ten.<\/p>\n

I rejoice for a father we are proud of, who instilled in us love and respect for work, quiet closeness to God, fairness and integrity woven into his being,
\nand an incredible ability for tolerance and kindness toward others.
\nIf only I could be like him \u2014 or even just part of what he was to us.<\/p>\n

Should I rejoice and smile when I see the deep love and respect people still hold for him \u2014 those who worked with him and those who merely met him?<\/p>\n

My father, dear daughter, was a living example \u2014 in his love for my mother,
\nthe way his eyes always looked at her with tenderness and affection.
\nHe made sure to instruct each of us to care for her, to stay close, and to respect her wishes.<\/p>\n

Each of us would quietly say to himself, \u201cHow does he love her this much?\u201d
\nAnd every wife in the family would look at her husband and hope he could be like him \u2014 or at least a little.<\/p>\n

He was the head of a family where both men and women \u2014 young and old \u2014 saw him as a hope, an example, and a role model, even in the simplest aspects of life.<\/p>\n

Looking back at our lives in his presence, he opened horizons for us and gave us all he dreamed of when we were young.
\nHe gave us a social status that allowed each of us to pursue our dreams.<\/p>\n

He brought us together in joy, travel, and discovery of the world.
\nHow many times did each of us have a place with him \u2014 somewhere in this world?<\/p>\n

He made the pursuit of knowledge, and the seriousness in achieving it, a non-negotiable part of our lives \u2014 for us and even our children \u2014 with encouragement and support.<\/p>\n

He made charity and giving quietly a hidden part of each of us \u2014 a belief we carry from him and practice with him.<\/p>\n

He turned every Saturday into a celebration we eagerly awaited \u2014 with unmatched love.
\nHe connected the entire family together in a brilliant, beautiful, and subtle way.<\/p>\n

His presence among us, his seat in front of us, his gaze upon us \u2014 all are unforgettable memories.
\nMay God keep his memory alive within us.<\/p>\n

May we be granted the strength to become like him\u2026
\nBecause, my dear, he is simply\u2026 irreplaceable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The young woman said, with tears in her eyes:
\n\u201cI wish every son and daughter could see their parents through your eyes \u2014 with such love and depth.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said:
\nEvery father and mother are irreplaceable to their children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A sharp young man said:
\n\u201cYou told us about your father, but what kind of father are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I answered:
\nFatherhood is the embodiment of a set of values, feelings, and behaviors through which a father expresses his love and care for his children.<\/p>\n

It includes protection, guidance, positive patience, assuming the best in them so they strive to meet it, fairness, sincere affection through actions \u2014 not just words \u2014 and being a role model.<\/p>\n

The well-read young woman said:
\n\u201cI\u2019ve read what your children wrote about you in your book \u2018They said to him, about him, and he said\u2019<\/em>, and I\u2019d like to read it to my peers so they know who you are as a father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your son Hassan wrote:<\/strong>
\nHis dignity is in his features,
\nHis compassion in his words,
\nHis culture in his writings,
\nHis emotions in his tone,
\nHis heritage in his noble ancestors,
\nHis love for life in his smile,
\nHis patriotism in his risks,
\nHis faith in his actions.
\nWe revolve around his love and wisdom.
\nHe taught me the meaning of life.<\/p>\n

Your daughter Dalia wrote:<\/strong>
\nI consider life with my father a gift from God and a blessing from the universe.
\nHe taught me that the world is beautiful, that knowing people is a treasure,
\nThat happiness is a choice, and that hope is always present and accessible,
\nAnd that we should spread positivity among people.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to believe someone can possess so much positive energy \u2014 but he does.<\/p>\n

In the hardest times, he tells us to try, to learn from life\u2019s lessons.
\nIn moments of deep loss, he reminds us to remember the good times.
\nIn sorrow, he shows us that there is always a ray of hope.<\/p>\n

Some see him as Hossam the respected politician,
\nOthers as Hossam the skilled doctor,
\nStill others as Hossam the thinker and philosopher.<\/p>\n

But to me, he is Hossam the affectionate father, the loving man, the close friend.<\/p>\n

Throughout my childhood and still now, he talks to me about everything \u2014 religion, relationships, life.
\nI can talk to him about anything without hesitation.
\nHe challenges my thoughts and makes me think deeply.
\nEven if we agree or disagree, I leave the conversation with a thirst for more knowledge.<\/p>\n

He taught me that there\u2019s no limit to dreams.
\nEven now, he is the extraordinary father who taught me to dream \u2014
\nwho pushes me to keep learning, to pursue my dreams,
\nto believe in my abilities, and to trust myself.<\/p>\n

I have seen him affect and transform the lives of others every single day \u2014
\nwith his positive energy \u2014
\nand it makes me want to be just like him.<\/p>\n

And he\u2026 is irreplaceable.<\/p>\n

Truly, it is a blessing to be the child of such a great father.<\/p>\n

As the saying goes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • \u201cWhen you look at your father\u2019s life, you see the future you wish to live.\u201d<\/li>\n

  • \u201cA father\u2019s strength is in his silence, and his love in his actions.\u201d<\/li>\n
  • \u201cA father feels your pain even when you say nothing.\u201d<\/li>\n
  • \u201cWhen children grow up, they realize their father\u2019s words were wiser than they thought.\u201d<\/li>\n
  • \u201cThere\u2019s no greater joy than a son\u2019s pride in his father, and no greater pride than a father in his child.\u201d<\/li>\n
  • \u201cThe lion roars but never eats its cubs.\u201d<\/li>\n
  • \u201cFatherhood isn\u2019t just about having children \u2014 it\u2019s about big hearts and limitless giving.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    So let us celebrate them while they are with us, and repay them not just on Mother’s Day or Father\u2019s Day \u2014

He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. He was against extending the state of emergency and objected to the National Democratic Party's unilateral constitutional amendments during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
