Despite my open opposition at times to the Egyptian government\u2019s economic policies and my criticism of the suppression of freedoms and the restriction of the public sphere, I do not confuse a firm national principle with mistakes I may see in the country\u2019s internal governance.<\/p>\n

Egypt\u2019s stance on the Palestinian issue\u2014chief among them, the rejection of the mass displacement of Palestinians to Sinai\u2014is a position to be commended<\/em>, not condemned. It deserves support from every Egyptian.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, I\u2019ve observed a systematic escalation that seems calculated to create a false impression that Egypt is blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza, holding it responsible for a humanitarian catastrophe caused by aggression and occupation.<\/p>\n

Footage is repeatedly circulated showing aid trucks waiting\u2014without mentioning the obstacles imposed by the Israeli occupation at the crossings. A narrative is spreading that flips reality, turning the gatekeeper into the accused, and the victim into the perpetrator.<\/p>\n

This shameful distortion of facts not only falsifies reality but also plants seeds of hostility between the Palestinian and Egyptian peoples\u2014people united by a common cause, one that Egyptians have always stood at the forefront of defending.<\/p>\n

\n

Egypt Is Not a Gateway for Displacement<\/h3>\n

Since the beginning of the war on Gaza, Egypt has been under undeclared international pressure and received politically packaged diplomatic offers urging it to open the door for civilians to leave Gaza under the pretext of \u201chumanitarian evacuation.\u201d But what\u2019s truly intended is the emptying of Gaza of its population<\/strong>, forcibly pushing Palestinians into a new exile\u2014this time in Sinai.<\/p>\n

This is the most dangerous scenario of all. It would effectively destroy any hope of establishing a Palestinian state and would shift the issue from a struggle over occupied land to a refugee problem, with neighboring countries expected to absorb them.<\/p>\n

Egypt\u2019s rejection of this scenario is not just a matter of sovereignty\u2014it\u2019s a principled position<\/strong> that preserves the core of the Palestinian cause. If Palestinians are pushed out of Gaza, the right of return is permanently closed, and Israel gains the perfect excuse: \u201cWe didn\u2019t expel anyone\u2014they left voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

When Support Turns into Defamation<\/h3>\n

No one denies the suffering of the people in Gaza. Egyptians feel this pain as deeply as Palestinians do. Egypt has opened its hospitals to the wounded, welcomed many humanitarian cases, and used all of its political and humanitarian tools to stop the bloodshed.<\/p>\n

But turning this support into an open-ended obligation<\/strong> or a tool of emotional blackmail<\/strong> serves only the enemies of the cause.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unfortunate that some media platforms\u2014and even certain Palestinian figures aligned with radical movements\u2014have begun directing accusations toward Egypt, unfairly claiming it is \u201ccomplicit in the siege.\u201d They ignore the fact that the main crossings between Gaza and the world are not controlled by Egypt<\/strong>, but by Israel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We now see protests in front of Egyptian embassies in some European countries attacking Egypt as if it were the cause of the tragedy.<\/p>\n

\n

Protecting National Security Is Not Betrayal<\/h3>\n

Some speak as if Egypt is obligated to open its borders without restriction, forgetting that no responsible state would allow its borders to collapse. Uncontrolled infiltration, armed groups, and ideologically driven factions like Hamas and Islamic Jihad operating inside Egyptian territory pose an existential threat\u2014especially to Sinai, for whose stability Egypt paid a heavy price after years of terrorism.<\/p>\n

Egypt\u2019s rejection of displacement<\/strong> does not mean abandonment of Gaza. On the contrary\u2014it is a defense of the Palestinians\u2019 right to remain on their land and a show of support for their struggle for independence.
\nOpening the gates to mass flight would be a quiet surrender of the cause<\/strong>, with consequences that would linger for decades.<\/p>\n

\n

Awareness Is Not a Media Commodity<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s easy to mislead people with images, live streams, and emotional headlines. But building true awareness requires honesty and balance. It\u2019s unfair to portray Egypt\u2014the only country that maintained a humanitarian passage into Gaza\u2014as the accused, while public discourse ignores Israel\u2019s role in blocking or even bombing aid trucks once they enter.<\/p>\n

Between February and May 2024<\/strong>, the United Nations<\/strong> warned of \u201ccatastrophic humanitarian consequences\u201d if one million Palestinians were displaced toward Egypt, stressing that it would not be part of any unilateral plan to push civilians into so-called \u201csafe zones.\u201d The head of the UN Refugee Agency stated that Palestinians are being driven into a \u201cnarrow, burning corner.\u201d<\/p>\n

In November 2023<\/strong>, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed that Egypt\u2019s role had been pivotal<\/strong> in ensuring humanitarian aid delivery and evacuating critical medical cases through the Rafah crossing, despite complex Israeli controls.<\/p>\n

There is a clear gap between media narratives and operational realities. Although some reports show trucks waiting at Rafah, they often fail to explain<\/strong> that delays are primarily due to Israeli restrictions and internal security negotiations<\/strong>, not Egypt closing its gates.<\/p>\n

While media propaganda claims \u201cEgypt is blocking aid,\u201d official data show otherwise: Egyptian crossings are open<\/strong>, aid trucks are moving within legal frameworks, and most delays are caused by Israeli obstruction\u2014not Cairo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Reliable UN data confirmed that up to 83% of delayed or withheld aid<\/strong> prior to May 2024 was due to Israeli procedures<\/strong>\u2014proving that Egypt is not the main obstacle<\/strong>.
\nThe European Union and the United Nations<\/strong> have documented Egypt\u2019s role as an effective humanitarian corridor<\/strong>, not a barrier.<\/p>\n

Field data\u2014from truck movements to food shortage reports\u2014clearly indicate that the true impediment<\/strong> to aid delivery lies not with those who resist displacement or closure, but with those who systematically delay thousands of trucks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When media narratives omit this context, they falsely cast Egypt as the obstacle, even though international organizations and indicators suggest the opposite<\/strong>.
\nLifting the threat at Rafah requires pressure on Israel<\/strong>, not blaming Egypt.<\/p>\n

\n

A Final Word<\/h3>\n

I repeat: Egypt\u2019s rejection of displacement is not a policy of closure. It is a defense of the Palestinian cause from erasure<\/strong>.
\nRafah remains the only remaining gateway for Palestinians, and despite pressure and false accusations, Egypt\u2014according to UN and EU reports\u2014has been the guardian who opened a path in the storm, not the one who shut it down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Egypt has supported Palestinian reconciliation, hosted factions, and facilitated ceasefire talks\u2014not out of a desire for influence or showmanship, but out of a deep understanding of its historic role and an unbreakable commitment to a shared destiny.
\nPalestine is a uniquely Egyptian wound.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Final Thought<\/h3>\n

Egypt is not Palestine\u2019s adversary, but its final pillar of support.<\/strong>

He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. He was against extending the state of emergency and objected to the National Democratic Party's unilateral constitutional amendments during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
