The civil state is not built only by laws and institutions; it is built first by knowledge, and by the ability to call things by their correct names\u2014not by their commonly used ones.<\/p>\n

One of the issues that most clearly exposes the confusion of consciousness in our societies is the question of name, identity, and origin:<\/p>\n

Who is Egyptian?
Who is Coptic?
Are we dealing with a religious description, or a civilizational belonging that predates religions?<\/p>\n

The word Coptic<\/em> is not, in its origin, a Christian designation. It is a purely Egyptian designation, deeply rooted in history\u2014before Christianity and before Islam.<\/p>\n

The Copts are the Egyptians. Christianity embraced the name; it did not create it.<\/p>\n

When Muslims entered Egypt, they did not enter a land without a people, nor a history without an identity.
They entered\u2014according to historical records\u2014about twenty-five thousand Muslims into a society whose population was close to two million.<\/p>\n

This means, scientifically and historically, that the overwhelming majority of Egyptian Muslims today are Copts who embraced Islam\u2014not ethnic newcomers, and not a civilizational rupture.<\/p>\n

Abandoning this origin is not humility; it is a forfeiture of memory.<\/p>\n

The Civil State Does Not Fear Roots<\/h3>\n

The civil state is not built by erasing origins, but by liberating them from religious or political exploitation.
When we say that Egyptian Muslims are Copts, we are not \u201cdiluting\u201d Christian identity, nor confusing Islamic belief. Rather, we are placing each belief in its proper place:<\/p>\n

A matter of faith, chosen freely, within a single national belonging.<\/p>\n

The civil state does not say, \u201cForget who you are,\u201d
but rather: \u201cDo not make what you believe a reason to divide what you belong to.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is common is not always correct.
Following what is common\u2014even with good intentions\u2014is not an intellectual virtue.<\/p>\n

The ethical duty of the intellectual is clarification, not appeasement.<\/p>\n

Yes, the term Coptic<\/em> has become associated in contemporary usage with Christianity, but this association is incidental and should not erase the original meaning.<\/p>\n

If we accept common usage without correction, we contribute\u2014unintentionally\u2014to reproducing sectarian logic, which is the opposite of the civil state.<\/p>\n

Lineage, Science, and the Unmasking of Illusion<\/h3>\n

People link lineage to the father and ignore the mother, as if identity were inherited through a single line.<\/p>\n

But science has shattered this illusion.
When DNA studies show that an Egyptian Muslim belongs overwhelmingly to the ancient Egyptian root, this is not an opinion\u2014it is a scientific fact.<\/p>\n

A person may spiritually or nominally affiliate with a noble lineage, such as descent from Ali ibn Abi Talib\u2014as is the case for me and my family, with documentation\u2014and this is a great honor.
But it does not negate my civilizational and genetic belonging to the land on which I was born, and to ancestors stretching back thousands of years.<\/p>\n

In this sense, the Egyptian Muslim whose genes prove him to be indigenous is:
\nCoptic by science,
Muslim by belief,
Egyptian by identity\u2014
and there is no contradiction in this.<\/p>\n

The civil state is not cultural neutrality; it is epistemic justice.<\/p>\n

Restoring the word Coptic<\/em> as a name for the Egyptian should not be avoided or feared. It is a step toward:<\/p>\n

    De-sectarianization<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Liberating religion from ethnicity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Liberating the nation from division<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    We do not return to origins in order to close in on ourselves, but to open up without fear.
    The Copts are not a sect; they are a national memory.
    And whoever does not know their memory will not build a true civil state.<\/p>\n

    May all the Copts of Egypt\u2014Muslims, Christians, and non-affiliated\u2014be well, in love and peace.<\/p>\n

    A blessed Christmas to Jesus Christ, whether celebrated in December or January, and a year filled with love and goodwill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. During the era of former president Hosni Mubarak he was called The Rationalist in the National Democratic Party NDP because his political calls and demands were consistent to a great extent with calls for political and democratic reform in Egypt. He was against extending the state of emergency and objected to the National Democratic Party's unilateral constitutional amendments during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
