Rather, they point to a meaning that a group of human beings has collectively agreed to attribute to a particular position, before knowing who will occupy it.

And here the real question begins: Why does a person need to dress another human being in a garment of words before addressing him? And what does this act—the act of naming and honoring—reveal about the philosophy of the community that practices it?

First: Is the Title for the Individual or for the Office?

When someone is addressed as “His Eminence” or “Your Holiness,” the community is not necessarily testifying that this particular man has attained eminence or holiness. Rather, it is declaring that it expects the office he occupies to be inhabited by such qualities.

Virtue here is a quality attributed to the position, not necessarily to the individual. It is a pre-existing social contract that says: “Whoever occupies this position, we assume that he embodies the virtue to which we aspire, and we entrust him with its responsibility.”

Likewise, “Excellency” does not describe the person occupying the palace, but rather the status of the head of state in the collective consciousness. And “Highness” or “Your Excellency” does not refer to the physical stature of a minister, but to the elevated responsibility entrusted to him.

This is the first philosophical trick of titles: they are inverted mirrors. A community does not describe people through them; rather, it describes its hopes and expectations of those it has chosen or accepted, and then projects those hopes onto the individual as though they were already qualities he genuinely possessed.

Second: Collective Choice as a Philosophical Act

When a community collectively agrees to honor a particular position—associating the judiciary with “justice,” medicine with “wisdom,” or old age with “respect”—it is, in reality, issuing a statement of values.

Titles are a silent record of what a nation considers worthy of reverence.

In this sense, titles are sociology in concentrated form.

If a researcher wanted to understand the spirit of a society, it would not be enough to read its constitution. They would also need to listen to the words people place before names in the street, in newspapers, and in public gatherings.

A society that calls its teacher “Professor,” while calling its wealthy man “Pasha,” is revealing which of these two values has deeper roots in its collective consciousness—even if this contradicts the slogans it publicly proclaims.

Third: The Paradox—When the Title Becomes Separated from Its Meaning

Here lies the philosophical tragedy of titles: they are a promise, not a guarantee.

When the gap between the title and its bearer becomes too wide—when there is “eminence” without virtue, “excellency” without dignity, and “high office” without responsibility—society does not merely lose its trust in the individual. It gradually begins to erode the meaning of the word itself.

Titles then cease to function as a moral measure and become nothing more than empty protocol: form without substance.

And this is precisely what signals a civilizational crisis: when a nation loses its ability to distinguish between those who genuinely deserve respect and those who receive it merely by virtue of their position.

The title may even become a form of social hypocrisy. Sometimes, that hypocrisy becomes so deeply embedded in the consciousness of the official himself that he comes to regard addressing him without his title as an insult or an act of disrespect.

Perhaps this is where a genuine test of any civilization lies: Do its noble words still carry their meaning, or have they become echoes without substance, repeated out of habit rather than conviction?

Fourth: A Human Dimension That Transcends Civilizations

What is striking is that this phenomenon is by no means exclusively Arab or Islamic.

When the British say “Your Excellency,” “The Honorable,” or “His Grace,” and when people in Japan address elders using titles that reflect a deeply rooted hierarchy, we are witnessing a universal human need: the need to give another human being a meaning that transcends his mortal body, and to remind authority—whatever its form—that it is entrusted with a value, not the owner of that value.

There is also a humorous dimension to the granting of titles in Egyptian society.

Once, titles such as “Bey” and “Pasha” were reserved for a small elite, according to their rank and status. Over time, however, the person calling out in the street became a “Pasha,” while the mechanic became a “Bashemohandes”—literally, “Engineer”—and being a “Doctor” no longer necessarily required holding a doctorate.

Meanwhile, the title “Effendi” became a term of mockery.

This is society’s way of diminishing value by expanding its generality over time.

Ultimately, societies are not built by laws alone. They are built through a system of meanings that people collectively agree upon, then clothe in language, and eventually clothe people in that language.

The question every nation should ask itself is not: “What titles do we use?”

It is:

“Do we still deserve the words we use to describe ourselves?”

When the title and its bearer correspond, civilization is at the height of its maturity. When they become separated, it may be one of the earliest signs of decline—not merely in individuals, but in the very meaning of the community itself.

“His Eminence”… “Your Excellency”… “His Excellency the Minister”… “Your Holiness”… These words do not describe a body, nor do they point to a name. He is the former head of the Gynecology Department, Faculty of Medicine Cairo University. He conducted his post graduate studies from 1979 till 1981 in the United States. He was elected as a member of the Egyptian Parliament and chairman of the Education and Scientific Research Committee in the Parliament from 2000 till 2005. As a politician, Dr. Hossam Badrawi was known for his independent stances. His integrity won the consensus of all people from various political trends. During the era of former president Hosni Mubarak he was called The Rationalist in the National Democratic Party NDP because his political calls and demands were consistent to a great extent with calls for political and democratic reform in Egypt. He was against extending the state of emergency and objected to the National Democratic Party's unilateral constitutional amendments during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. Dr. Hossam supported the Tamarod movement in its beginning and he declared that toppling the Brotherhood was a must and a pressing risk that had to be taken few months prior to the June 30 revolution and confirmed that the army would support the legitimacy given by the people","sameAs":["https://www.facebook.com/hossambadrawi/","https://x.com/HossamBadrawi"]}]}

Hossam Badrawi writes for Al-Hurriya: Between the Title and the Person: A Philosophy of Collective Attributes - Dr. Hossam Badrawi
https://www.hossambadrawi.com/en/hossam-badrawi-writes-for-al-hurriya-between-the-title-and-the-person-a-philosophy-of-collective-attributes/
en_US
article
Hossam Badrawi writes for Al-Hurriya: Between the Title and the Person: A Philosophy of Collective Attributes - Dr. Hossam Badrawi
“His Eminence”… “Your Excellency”… “His Excellency the Minister”… “Your Holiness”… These words do not describe a body, nor do they point to a name. He is the former head of the Gynecology Department, Faculty of Medicine Cairo University. He conducted his post graduate studies from 1979 till 1981 in the United States. He was elected as a member of the Egyptian Parliament and chairman of the Education and Scientific Research Committee in the Parliament from 2000 till 2005. As a politician, Dr. Hossam Badrawi was known for his independent stances. His integrity won the consensus of all people from various political trends. During the era of former president Hosni Mubarak he was called The Rationalist in the National Democratic Party NDP because his political calls and demands were consistent to a great extent with calls for political and democratic reform in Egypt. He was against extending the state of emergency and objected to the National Democratic Party's unilateral constitutional amendments during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. Dr. Hossam supported the Tamarod movement in its beginning and he declared that toppling the Brotherhood was a must and a pressing risk that had to be taken few months prior to the June 30 revolution and confirmed that the army would support the legitimacy given by the people
https://www.facebook.com/hossambadrawi/","https://x.com/HossamBadrawi
["GET
