There is a subtle but decisive difference between the man who rides the wave of anger and the man who builds on its wreckage. The populist leader rarely arrives with a coherent economic or civilizational vision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He arrives carried by collective rage, a sense of humiliation, fear of the future, and an exaggerated nostalgia for an imagined past that was never as pure as it is made to appear. At his core, he is an interpreter of emotion rather than an engineer of the future\u2014he reads what is churning in people\u2019s hearts and turns it into a speech, not a plan.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
History, examined closely, offers revealing examples. Hitler did not invent Germany\u2019s defeat, the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles, or the inflation and social collapse that battered German society; these were realities that predated him. What he did, with a kind of diabolical cleverness, was something else: he gave anger a name, gave fear an enemy, and gave frustration a myth of salvation. He had less a civilizational project than a mobilizing narrative\u2014one that converted shared pain into political fuel.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Benito Mussolini, in similar fashion, offered no clear economic program so much as he capitalized on Italy\u2019s sense of being \u201ca nation owed more than it had received.\u201d He presented Fascism as an act of will rather than a plan, turning the state into a stage and the leader into a performer who mastered the pause and the tone. Performance mattered more to him than substance; presence outweighed ideas.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Donald Trump is an equally revealing contemporary case: he brought no new economic vision and produced no coherent state project, but he captured with precision the anger of the white lower-middle class, its fear of losing its identity, and its contempt for political elites. His slogan, \u201cMake America Great Again,\u201d was not so much a plan as an undefined nostalgia\u2014an empty vessel into which everyone could pour whatever they wished to see.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The common thread running through all these cases is the same: the people before the project, emotion before reason, identity before politics, the enemy before the solution, the leader before the institution. Populism, in the end, does not build a state\u2014it redistributes anger.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Yet there is a finer point worth noting, so that the matter is not reduced to easy condemnation: the populist is not entirely a liar. He begins with something true, but selects a fragment of that truth, magnifies it, isolates it from its context, and turns it into a weapon. This is precisely why he succeeds. An outright lie is easy to expose, but a magnified half-truth is more deceptive because it carries within it a seed of honesty that lends credibility to the exaggeration built upon it.<\/div>\n

Leader of the Moment, or Maker of the Path?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Here the essential distinction becomes clear: between populism as a political investment in existing sentiment and genuine historic leadership as the capacity to transform a crisis-ridden reality into a new trajectory\u2014through vision, a coherent project, institution-building, and a personal cost that the leader himself is willing to bear.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The populist leader shouts more and explains less. He thrives on the sharp divide between \u201cus\u201d and \u201cthem,\u201d treats criticism as betrayal, and sees himself as the solution. To survive, he needs perpetual crisis, for without it he loses his reason for being. The historic leader, the maker of the path, does not deny anger, but neither does he deify it. He does not court the crowd but seeks to elevate it; he accepts immediate loss for long-term gain and builds institutions stronger than himself\u2014institutions capable of outlasting his departure.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Nelson Mandela offers a revealing example. He did not merely ride the wave of Black anger\u2014he restrained it and transformed it from a demand for vengeance into a project of national reconciliation, a far more difficult political achievement than riding the wave, but the kind that earns a lasting place in history. Franklin Roosevelt offers another example: he did not settle for crisis rhetoric but redefined the role of the state, built long-term policies, and left behind institutions that endured for decades.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The sharper difference between the two models lies in what each leaves behind. The populist leaves a more divided society, diminished trust between people and their institutions, and institutions weaker than before. The historic leader leaves new rules of the game, a sense of hope capable of enduring, and a state whose survival no longer depends on his own person.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Why, then, do we so often admire the populist by mistake? Because populism resembles courage in appearance: the raised voice sounds like resolve, and anger creates a false impression of strength. But history is not written in a raised voice\u2014it is written by what remains after the shouting subsides.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
When Crisis Becomes the Mother of Populism<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A society in crisis does not think with the same tools as a stable one. In a crisis, fear outruns reason, survival takes precedence over values, and the quick solution is preferred to the correct one. Here the populist appears as a psychological first responder rather than a political leader. The true leader says, \u201cThe road is long and painful, and it demands sacrifice,\u201d while the populist says, \u201cI am the solution, and the enemy is the cause.\u201d In a time of pain, people do not necessarily ask for truth\u2014they ask for temporary relief.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Add to this societies that have long been failed by their elites, repeatedly deceived, and forced to witness corruption without accountability. In such a moment, anyone who is \u201cagainst the elite\u201d can appear to be a savior, even without competence or an alternative project, because the populist thrives on hostility toward the elite rather than on building an alternative.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Weak education, for its part, produces an increasingly emotional public. As education deteriorates, critical thinking weakens, the ability to distinguish rhetoric from a plan diminishes, and the leader comes to be judged by the force of his voice rather than the quality of his thinking. Here Gustave Le Bon\u2019s observation is borne out: crowds do not seek truth so much as faith\u2014and the populist gives them faith, even if it is false.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Societies that feel they have lost their standing, suffered historical humiliation, or had their dreams stolen seek out whoever will shout in their name, avenge their wounded dignity, and restore their \u201cgreatness\u201d\u2014even if that greatness is imagined rather than real.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The painful truth in all this is that the historic leader is psychologically \u201cexhausting.\u201d He does not simply comfort people; he burdens them with responsibility and asks them to change themselves before they change their ruler. This is not a message that wins elections quickly, nor one that satisfies an angry public. He therefore often loses to the populist at first, even if, in the judgment of history, he ultimately prevails.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Finally, when institutions weaken, the rule of law falters, and the future recedes from view, the \u201cstrongman\u201d emerges as an alternative, as though logic itself were concluding: if the state cannot save us, let the individual save us. It is precisely here that leadership dies and idolization is born.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A society in crisis does not produce the populist by accident\u2014it summons him psychologically. The populist is a mirror of fear, a voice of anger, and a symptom of a deeper malady, while the true leader is usually the product of societies that have chosen to confront their pain consciously rather than be anesthetized by slogans.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Our Societies as a Case in Crisis<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Looking at our Arab societies\u2014and at Egypt specifically as a case in point\u2014we find that an accumulation of crises leaves little room for long-term thinking. A society that has lived for decades under constant economic pressure, existential anxiety over daily livelihood, fear of the future, and collective psychological exhaustion does not go looking for a state project; it looks for whoever can reassure it, here and now, that things are \u201cunder control.\u201d This is the ideal environment in which populism can flourish.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
An exhausted collective memory\u2014one that has endured defeats and political setbacks, great hopes left unfulfilled, and reform attempts that ended in disappointment\u2014develops what might be called a \u201csurvival mentality\u201d rather than a \u201cbuilding mentality.\u201d In this state, the leader who asks for patience is rejected, while the leader who promises a swift solution is embraced, even when that promise is illusory.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Decades of weak institutional life have also bequeathed to us a public consciousness that sees the state as synonymous with the ruler, stability as synonymous with a strong individual, and criticism as an existential threat. This inheritance produces a particular kind of populism\u2014populism in the name of the state rather than in the name of the people\u2014a discourse that may appear \u201crational\u201d or \u201cpatriotic\u201d on the surface, but which, at its core, excludes pluralism, rejects debate, and sanctifies the decision at the expense of the process.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
When politics narrows\u2014with no meaningful parties, no genuine exchange of ideas, and no societal training in disagreement\u2014the public sphere becomes a space for mobilizing speeches, a language of fear, and the constant invocation of danger. Here the historic leader finds little room to emerge, because leadership requires politics, not mobilization alone.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Weak critical education, combined with media that tends toward reductive simplification, the stark binary of \u201cfor\u201d and \u201cagainst,\u201d and the disappearance of complex questions, produces a public that responds to tone rather than content, to feeling rather than a plan\u2014an ideal audience for populism and a very difficult one for genuine leadership to address.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is why the historic leader does not easily emerge among us: he would have to say uncomfortable things\u2014about the structure of the economy, political culture, the relationship between society and the state, and our own long acceptance of silence. Such a message draws little applause, earns no swift reward, and risks being misunderstood or having its bearer accused of betrayal.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The painful paradox is that our societies are rich in competence but poor in pathways. Reasonable figures are sidelined, withdraw, or are consumed by bureaucracy, while populist rhetoric\u2014simpler, faster, and intellectually cheaper\u2014fills the vacuum left by rational discourse.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We do not suffer from a shortage of capable men and women, but from societal exhaustion, political blockage, institutional weakness, and a deep fear of the unknown. This combination does not produce historic leaders\u2014it reproduces populist patterns in different forms, again and again.<\/div>\n

A Final Thought<\/div>\n

Nations that search for someone who resembles their anger rarely find someone capable of building their future. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
