On the anniversary of his death on September 10, 1981<\/em><\/p>\n

There are musicians who delight the ear, and there are others who build, through melody, an architecture in which the soul dwells from one generation to the next.<\/p>\n

Riad Al-Sunbati, whose death anniversary we commemorate these days, belonged to the second kind.<\/p>\n

He did not so much compose a song as erect a monument, laying one stone upon another until the melody stood tall, as though it had never been merely a passing sound in the air.<\/p>\n

He was born in Faraskur, Damietta Governorate, in 1906, to a father who was a Qur\u2019an reciter and performed at religious celebrations and festivals. Thus, the child carried music in his ears before he ever carried it in his hands.<\/p>\n

His father taught him the maqamat and rhythms. The boy was later nicknamed the \u201cNightingale of Mansoura\u201d<\/strong> before he reached the age of twenty.<\/p>\n

When he moved to Cairo and applied for admission as a student at the Institute of Arabic Music, the examination committee concluded that his abilities exceeded those expected of a student and appointed him as an oud instructor instead.<\/p>\n

That was the first sign of genius: the newcomer was received as a teacher rather than a student.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Between Authenticity and Modernity<\/h2>\n

Al-Sunbati created a school of his own in composing the Arabic qasida. He was not an echo of anyone else.<\/p>\n

He brought the oud into the heart of the orchestra and immersed himself in Eastern music to its furthest reaches. He then fashioned from it a path toward the classical forms of Western music, which he admired, collected on records, and played excerpts from on his oud.<\/p>\n

Some of his contemporaries described him as a \u201cmusical ascetic\u201d<\/strong>: obsessively punctual, quiet, living away from the noise of the artistic world, and devoted to his inner workshop, where an idea was refined before emerging as a melody.<\/p>\n

In 1946, when he composed for Umm Kulthum \u201cGhalabt Asaleh fi Rouhi\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cI Tried in Vain to Reconcile with My Soul\u201d) as an artistic response to Al-Qasabji\u2019s \u201cRaq El-Habib\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cThe Beloved Has Grown Tender\u201d), he opened a new chapter in the history of Arabic singing: the long romantic song, constructed like an ascending architectural structure that does not exhaust itself in its first few minutes, but gradually unfolds like a great novel.<\/p>\n

From the womb of that experience, which continued for more than two decades, came \u201cAl-Atlal\u201d (\u201cThe Ruins\u201d)<\/strong>, which many critics have agreed is the greatest Arabic song of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

A Trinity That Is Complete Only When All Its Sides Are Present<\/h2>\n

In my view, it is difficult to speak of Al-Sunbati without speaking of Mohamed Abdel Wahab and Farid Al-Atrash.<\/p>\n

The three formed, in the consciousness of the Arab nation, something resembling a trinity in which none of the three could replace another.<\/p>\n

Abdel Wahab was the adventurer who opened windows onto everything new, borrowing instruments and ideas from the West and never ceasing to experiment.<\/p>\n

Farid Al-Atrash was the lover who shaped pain into danceable forms, blending personal sorrow with a rhythm that brought people together.<\/p>\n

As for Al-Sunbati, he was the sage among them\u2014the engineer who never rushed and who kept one question before him:<\/p>\n

How can the profound meaning of a word be translated into a musical structure that will not collapse?<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was neither less modern than Abdel Wahab nor less emotional than Farid. But he chose to make his modernity deeply rooted and his emotion carefully structured rather than improvised.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this was the secret behind the exceptional respect he received: he reconciled authenticity and renewal without betraying either one.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What Remains?<\/h2>\n

When we contemplate his legacy\u2014539 vocal works, 38 instrumental pieces, collaborations with 120 poets, and 282 works with Umm Kulthum alone<\/strong>\u2014we realize that we are not simply looking at the volume of his output, but at a philosophy of art itself:<\/p>\n

The melody is not an ornament added to the words; it is the word discovering its true body.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is why Al-Sunbati has remained present\u2014despite his avoidance of the limelight and his distance from the noise of fame\u2014every time \u201cAl-Atlal,\u201d \u201cArak Asiya Al-Dam,\u201d \u201cWulida Al-Huda,\u201d \u201cWa Uddat Ayni,\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cArouh Lameen\u201d<\/strong> is brought back to life.<\/p>\n

What he built was not a passing fashion, but an architecture in which generations continue to dwell.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this is the deepest lesson he leaves us with on his anniversary:<\/p>\n

He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
