How did a woman who lived more than two thousand years ago remain present with such warmth in the hearts of millions of people? And how did she become one of those rare figures whose name can be spoken by both Muslims and Christians, with both feeling love and reverence, despite differences in belief and theological interpretation?<\/p>\n

Every year, with the beginning of the Virgin Mary\u2019s fast, I feel that all of Egypt breathes one name:<\/p>\n

Mary.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know of no woman in the history of religions who has managed to gather around herself such a profound love that transcends denominations and sects.<\/p>\n

Human beings have disagreed over matters of faith, history, and politics, but they have rarely disagreed over their love for Mary.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this is her first secret.<\/p>\n

She is not merely a religious figure, but a rare human bridge at which believers can meet without any of them having to abandon their faith.<\/p>\n

In the Holy Quran, she is the only woman mentioned explicitly by name and the only woman to have an entire chapter dedicated to her. God says:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when the angels said, \u2018O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the Gospel, she is called \u201cblessed among women.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two different texts, two different theological traditions, yet they meet at the same meaning:<\/p>\n

purity and divine election.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But what draws me to Mary is not only her religious stature. It is her humanity.<\/p>\n

The Quran does not present us with a symbol stripped of emotion, but with a woman who is afraid, who suffers, and who experiences loneliness.<\/p>\n

When the pains of childbirth became intense, she said:<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I wish I had died before this and had become something forgotten, utterly forgotten.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What a profoundly human statement.<\/p>\n

It is not a theological declaration, but the cry of a woman confronting a moment unlike any other.<\/p>\n

Then reassurance comes to her.<\/p>\n

As though the message is telling us that faith does not mean the absence of fear, but rather the ability to pass through it.<\/p>\n

What strikes me most about Mary is that she did not triumph through words.<\/p>\n

She did not enter into an argument with those who accused her.<\/p>\n

She did not defend herself.<\/p>\n

And she did not explain her miracle.<\/p>\n

She simply allowed the truth to speak for itself.<\/p>\n

That is why I see her as representing what we might call a \u201ctheology of silence.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an age when noise has become a means of asserting one\u2019s existence, Mary offers an entirely different lesson.<\/p>\n

Her silence is not weakness, but trust.<\/p>\n

Her serenity is not surrender, but certainty that truth does not always need to shout.<\/p>\n

Then there is the scientific dimension, which inspires even more wonder than controversy.<\/p>\n

Jesus was born male.<\/p>\n

From a genetic perspective, the formation of a male requires the presence of a Y chromosome, while women carry two X chromosomes.<\/p>\n

If natural parthenogenesis were to occur in mammals, it would not produce a male in this manner.<\/p>\n

From this perspective, the miracle appears deeper than we imagine.<\/p>\n

The miracle is not merely pregnancy without a father, but the creation of the genetic material itself by divine command.<\/p>\n

Here science stands respectfully before the limits of its own capacity.<\/p>\n

Science explains how the laws of nature operate, but it cannot explain the moment when the Creator chooses to create beyond those laws.<\/p>\n

The question of the Y chromosome is not an objection to faith. Rather, it expresses the human sense of wonder before a miracle that transcends our scientific tools.<\/p>\n

And Egypt has another story with Mary.<\/p>\n

According to Christian tradition, Egypt was the refuge to which the Holy Family fled from the brutality of Herod.<\/p>\n

For this reason, the journey of the Holy Family has remained part of the spiritual and geographical memory of Egyptians.<\/p>\n

Whether we view it from the perspective of history or from the perspective of faith, its human meaning remains profoundly beautiful.<\/p>\n

Egypt was once a homeland that opened its arms to a mother carrying her child and searching for safety.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this is why an Egyptian\u2014whether Muslim or Christian\u2014feels that Mary\u2019s story is not distant from him.<\/p>\n

It is part of his national memory just as it is part of his religious memory.<\/p>\n

Then comes the most painful moment in the story.<\/p>\n

What happened to Mary after Christ\u2019s ascension\u2014or after the Crucifixion, according to Christian belief?<\/p>\n

The texts are almost silent.<\/p>\n

They mention her presence at the great moments, and then she disappears.<\/p>\n

In my view, this silence carries a profound meaning.<\/p>\n

She had fulfilled her role, and then she withdrew from the scene.<\/p>\n

She did not seek power.<\/p>\n

She did not pursue glory.<\/p>\n

She did not make herself the center of history.<\/p>\n

She disappeared as a river disappears after nourishing the land.<\/p>\n

As though some great figures do not need a written ending, because their impact has become greater than their biography.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this is where the secret of the love surrounding her name lies.<\/p>\n

Before she was a religious symbol, she was a mother.<\/p>\n

And motherhood is a language understood by all humanity.<\/p>\n

Before the sacred books were written, there was a mother holding her child.<\/p>\n

Before philosophers spoke of mercy, a mother was already practicing it.<\/p>\n

That is why many people reach Mary through the door of motherhood before they reach her through the door of theology.<\/p>\n

Yet one thing remains worthy of reflection.<\/p>\n

Mary was not a queen.<\/p>\n

She did not lead an army.<\/p>\n

She possessed no fortune.<\/p>\n

She ruled no state.<\/p>\n

She wrote no book.<\/p>\n

She had no media or institutions to manufacture her fame.<\/p>\n

And yet, more than two thousand years later, her name remains alive in mosques, churches, homes, and hearts.<\/p>\n

Kings and emperors have passed away.<\/p>\n

The names of those who wielded power have disappeared.<\/p>\n

But she remains.<\/p>\n

Because power creates a temporary presence, while love creates immortality.<\/p>\n

During the days of the Virgin Mary\u2019s fast, I do not see the occasion merely as a revered Christian religious practice. I also see it as an opportunity to reflect upon a rare shared human space.<\/p>\n

A Muslim does not need to become Christian in order to love Mary.<\/p>\n

Nor does a Christian need to abandon the particularity of his faith in order to rejoice that his Muslim neighbor reveres her.<\/p>\n

Differences in belief do not prevent people from meeting upon shared values.<\/p>\n

Perhaps true civilization lies in being able to disagree about our understanding of heaven while sharing, here on Earth, mercy, justice, love, and human dignity.<\/p>\n

And in an age when people struggle over identities and symbols, Mary remains a testament to the possibility of different people gathering around a single human being.<\/p>\n

She did not leave us all the answers.<\/p>\n

Instead, she left us with a more beautiful question:<\/p>\n

How did a woman carry some of heaven\u2019s greatest mysteries, then walk the Earth like any frightened mother, and finally disappear quietly after changing the course of history?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps we will never find the complete answer in the texts.<\/p>\n

But every year, we find something of it in the hearts that still remember her name with love.<\/p>\n
