There is one phrase that can silence even the most articulate speaker in a single Arab discussion: \u201cYou\u2019re just theorizing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sentence requires no evidence to refute an argument and no counterargument to challenge it. It is enough to utter those words to reduce an idea, however coherent, to the status of an intellectual luxury that has no practical relevance to anyone.<\/p>\n

When did \u201ctheorizing\u201d become an accusation? And how did its original meaning become so distorted that the word came to sound more like an insult than a description?<\/p>\n

Linguistically, the word is entirely innocent of what is now attached to it. To contemplate or reflect is to examine something thoughtfully and carefully. A theory is not a fantasy detached from reality; it is an attempt to understand reality\u2014a conceptual framework through which we organize scattered facts so that they become comprehensible, explainable, and even predictable.<\/p>\n

No political system exists without a theory underpinning it, even if only implicitly. When a state chooses to invest in education before roads, or in healthcare before armaments, it is engaging in theorizing, whether it acknowledges this or not, because it is adopting a particular vision of the priorities of human development and civilization.<\/p>\n

The problem, then, is not theorizing as an intellectual activity. Rather, it lies in a particular kind of theorizing that, through a bitter accumulation of historical experience, has become a negative model deeply ingrained in the public consciousness.<\/p>\n

In this context, the intellectual has come to be seen as someone who excels at describing an ailment in captivating, eloquent language but has no practical remedy\u2014or does not even want to offer one.<\/p>\n

Thus, an unjust equation has taken root in people’s minds: the more abstract an idea becomes, the further it moves from accountability for its consequences.<\/p>\n

Here lies the fundamental distinction that I believe holds the key to the issue: one kind of theorizing continually subjects itself to the test of reality, correcting its course whenever facts challenge it. Another kind takes refuge in abstraction precisely to escape that test.<\/p>\n

Perhaps Ibn Khaldun, when he distinguished between a report accepted at face value and one tested against an understanding of the nature of human civilization and social organization, was addressing the same problem from his own perspective: knowledge that is not measured against the logic of reality and its transformations remains vulnerable to error, however internally consistent it may appear.<\/p>\n

This is the very lesson that repeats itself today whenever we encounter political rhetoric that promises everything because it has no intention of being tested on anything.<\/p>\n

If theorizing must be criticized, then the criticism should target its failure to translate thought into action, not the presence of thought itself.<\/p>\n

What poses the greater danger to public life is not someone who thinks carefully before acting, but someone who acts without any underlying idea\u2014or who acts on a superficial idea and repeats the same mistakes with renewed confidence.<\/p>\n

It is equally dangerous to deny any citizen or public official the right to think aloud on the grounds that this is a time for action, not words\u2014as though action without prior reflection were a virtue, when in reality it comes closer to gambling.<\/p>\n

This leaves us with a final question: When we dismiss \u201ctheoreticians,\u201d are we genuinely rejecting empty abstraction, or are we unknowingly evading ideas that make us uncomfortable because the only response we can offer is to call them \u201cjust a theory\u201d?<\/p>\n

An honest answer to this question may be the first step toward more serious public action and political discourse that is less afraid of ideas themselves.<\/p>\n

We should not put everyone who thinks and develops theories in the dock. Those who should be held accountable are the people responsible for execution and implementation.<\/p>\n

And if a theoretician goes further and develops practical plans and policies for implementation, despite holding no position of power, then we should thank that person\u2014and direct our indignation toward those who approve the plans but fail to implement them.<\/p>\n

One final thought\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Isn’t a constitution, in essence, a theory of what governments are required to uphold\u2014a framework put to a popular vote?<\/p>\n

If a constitution exists, shouldn’t governments formulate policies to implement it? Shouldn’t parliament and the media hold the executive branch accountable for achieving its objectives?<\/p>\n

Who is to blame: those who drafted the constitution and articulated its declared vision, or those who failed to put it into practice?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court. He was against extending the state of emergency and objected to the National Democratic Party's unilateral constitutional amendments during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He played a very important political role when he defended, from the very first beginning of the revolution, the demonstrators' right to call for their demands. He called on the government to listen and respond to their demands. Consequently and due to Dr. Badrawi's popularity, Mubarak appointed him as the NDP Secretary General thus replacing the members of the Bureau of the Commission. During that time, Dr. Badrawi expressed his political opinion to Mubarak that he had to step down. He had to resign from the party after 5 days of his appointment on February 10 when he declared his political disagreement with the political leadership in dealing with the demonstrators who called for handing the power to the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, from the very first moment his stance was clear by rejecting a religion-based state which he considered as aiming to limit the Egyptians down to one trend. He considered deposed president Mohamed Morsi's decision to bring back the People's Assembly as a reinforcement of the US-supported dictatorship. He was among the first to denounce the incursion of Morsi's authority over the judicial authority, condemning the Brotherhood militias' blockade of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
